A dock can be in perfect shape while the bank behind it slides into the lake. On Lake Norman that is a common and expensive problem, because the shoreline here is Piedmont red clay, not rock. Why Clay Banks Fail Here

Lake Norman runs heavy recreational traffic, and the wake rolls into coves all season. Where that wake meets a soft red-clay bank with no protection, it cuts the toe away. Runoff from the yard above saturates the clay and adds weight. With the toe gone and the soil heavy, the bank slumps toward the water. The muddy, brown water this lake is known for is partly that eroded clay. The fix is to break the wake at the waterline before it undercuts the bank.

Where a lot is tight or the drop is steep, a vertical bulkhead or a block retaining wall makes better sense than a sloped rock face. A wall that lasts has real drainage behind it, a toe built into stable ground, and tiebacks that hold it against the soil load. We build them that way. A wall without drainage is a dam holding back saturated clay, and it fails from behind.

Why is my Lake Norman bank washing away?

Will riprap stop my clay bank from slumping for good?

A properly built rock face will, because it fixes the cause. It armors the toe of the bank against wake, it drains the water that would otherwise lubricate a slide, and it is keyed into stable ground so it does not slump itself. A pile of rock dumped on a slope is not that. We build the toe, the filter layer, and the face so the bank holds.

Can you fix erosion without disturbing my dock?

In most cases, yes. Shoreline work happens at the bank while the dock stays on its poles off the bank. We stage rock and equipment to protect the dock and any plantings we can save, and we coordinate the shoreline and any dock work so the two do not fight each other.
